Psychotherapy

“Psychotherapy” is a word of Greek origin (ψυχή-psyche meaning “soul” and εραπεία-therapeia meaning “healing” or “treatment”) and it signifies a combination of techniques that heal or help to heal a variety of psychological problems. All these techniques share a specific type of therapeutic influence that arises in the relationship of the trained psychotherapist to the client (as in individual therapy) or the psychotherapist to the group of clients (as in group, couple or family therapy). The aim of these planned and deliberate interactions is to influence client’s emotions, behaviour and way of thinking, their personality and the relationship to the world, to reduce both their disturbances and root causes. Thus, the ultimate goal is to relieve suffering, improve functioning, meet challenges of life and increase life satisfaction. Psychotherapy helps to reinforce self-esteem, to develop one’s own potential, to find the meaning of life, the sense of balance and peace (Kratochvil, 2002).

The process of psychotherapy includes the variety of ways, methods and techniques. Consequently, professional therapists undertaking their work, should be trained approprietely and should have particular personality traits, such as the ability to empathize. In addition, they should undertake their own therapy and submit their own therapeutic practice under a regular supervision. Their work should always be conducted with the appropriate ethical approach.

There are a couple of basic psychotherapeutic approaches, which mostly differ in understanding both the origins of psychic suffering and the methods of treatment. Recently, according to the integrating (or eclectic) approach, the process of psychotherapy has been viewed as a combination of different methods and approaches which should be combined in order to obtain the best therapeutic effect.

Psychotherapy should be conducted regularly (once a week) through regular meetings with a therapist. In particular cases, sessions may be held at a high frequency (daily or two-three times per week) or at a low frequency (once every three-four weeks). A therapeutic session lasts 50 minutes. There can be short-term therapy (lasting from about 6 to 12 sessions) or long-term therapy (from one to several years), depending on the problem to be solved. Sessions are usually held at fixed times and days of the week. Psychotherapists maintain professional confidentiality. Therapeutic work is subjected to regular supervision.
